As Kenya’s 2027 General Election approaches, President William Ruto has urged citizens to remain calm, asserting that divine intervention will determine the outcome. Speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, Ruto delivered a message of faith and reassurance amid rising political tensions.

“Relax, what God has planned will happen,” the President stated. “We will vote for a peaceful election that is free and fair. No one can change what God has decided.”

When questioned about his re-election prospects, Ruto displayed a philosophical stance: “If God decides I will serve a second term, I will. If God decides otherwise, it’s fine. Relax.” His comments come as political alliances shift and opposition figures intensify campaigns ahead of next year’s polls.

The President also pushed back against narratives that Kenya is headed in the wrong direction. He criticized media outlets for focusing on negative stories, recounting a conversation with a journalist friend: “My friend told me that bad news sells, but good news does not. When you read the headlines, some people run their businesses and keep progressing, but the bad news does not tell the whole story.”

Ruto firmly rejected suggestions of state failure: “Kenya is not, and will never be, a failed state. I don’t care how many headlines claim Kenya goes in the wrong direction. This country will never go in the wrong direction.”

He emphasized Kenya’s resilience over his three years in office: “We have many things to thank God for. God has shown grace to our nation over the last three years.”

As election season heats up, Ruto’s faith-centered messaging aims to calm anxieties while positioning himself above political fray. Whether this resonates with voters remains to be seen.
