President William Ruto has launched a spirited defense of Kenya’s trajectory, pushing back against media narratives suggesting the country is heading in the wrong direction. Speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast, Ruto argued that negative headlines don’t reflect the full reality of Kenya’s progress.

“I once asked a journalist friend why it is rare to find a positive story in the media,” Ruto recounted. “My friend told me that bad news sells, but good news does not. When you read the headlines, some people run their businesses and keep progressing, but the bad news does not tell the whole story, it just helps sell the paper.”

The President’s comments come amid increased scrutiny of his administration’s economic policies, governance challenges, and preparations for the 2027 General Election. Critics have pointed to rising living costs, controversial tax policies, and political tensions as evidence of instability.

However, Ruto firmly rejected suggestions that Kenya is failing: “Kenya is not, and will never be, a failed state. If you read the headlines, just know that people still run their businesses, and for their businesses to succeed, they have to write about bad news because that is what sells.”

He emphasized resilience and divine grace: “We have many things to thank God for, and I say that without any fear of contradiction. God has shown grace to our nation over the last three years.”

Ruto’s critique of media coverage reflects a common tension between political leaders and journalists worldwide. While media outlets argue their role is to hold power accountable and report on challenges facing citizens, leaders often feel positive developments receive insufficient attention.

The President urged Kenyans to look beyond headlines and recognize ongoing business activity, infrastructure development, and economic resilience. His message appears designed to counter opposition narratives and boost public confidence ahead of election season.

Whether this defense resonates with ordinary Kenyans facing economic pressures remains an open question as the country approaches a critical electoral period.
