Kenya’s political temperature is rising as the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) fires back at former President Uhuru Kenyatta with a scathing open letter that has set tongues wagging across the nation.

In a strongly-worded statement released on Tuesday, UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire and Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan accused Uhuru of harbouring “intense bitterness, fierce jealousy, endless envy, and toxic obsession” with President William Ruto. The party claims the former president has never accepted Ruto’s 2022 electoral victory and continues to work behind the scenes to destabilize the current administration.

The letter comes in response to Uhuru’s recent criticism of the government over rising living costs and fuel prices. During a Jubilee party delegates forum at Kiambu Golf Club, Uhuru urged leaders to stop divisive politics, arguing that Kenyans are angry not because of politics but due to economic pressure.

UDA didn’t hold back in its defence, crediting the Ruto administration with stabilizing an economy they claim was left “weighed down by debt, high inflation, and weakened institutions.” The party highlighted achievements in agriculture, healthcare expansion through the Social Health Authority, education, affordable housing, and infrastructure development.

On the contentious fuel price issue, UDA defended the government’s approach, stating they’re pursuing long-term energy security through investments in local oil production, renewable energy, and electric mobility rather than unsustainable subsidies.

The exchange reveals the deepening rift between Ruto and his predecessor, who were once political allies. As Kenya heads toward the 2027 elections, this public spat signals that old political wounds remain fresh and the battle for Mt. Kenya’s political soul is far from over.
